The ASEAN countries are not only a big fertilizer market for neighboring China, but also a rich source of potassium resources. Chinese companies have great opportunities in the fertilizer market in ASEAN. The 9th China-ASEAN Expo will be held in Nanning, Guangxi in September. Industry insiders believe that the domestic fertilizer industry needs to pay more attention to “ASEAN opportunitiesâ€.
Wu Jitian, an inspector of the Agriculture Department of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, pointed out that ASEAN is the world's largest exporter of rice and an important export area for oil, rubber, and fruits in the world. The demand for fertilizers and other agricultural products is increasing. The fertilizer industry in ASEAN countries started relatively late and the production cost was high. At the same time, the production of chemical fertilizers in these countries is limited by energy supply quotas, and the production capacity is far from meeting the needs of agricultural production and it needs to be imported from abroad. In Vietnam alone, it needs to import 1.5 million to 1.8 million tons of urea, 700,000 tons of diammonium phosphate and 200,000 tons of compound fertilizer each year.
In recent years, China's chemical fertilizer industry has developed steadily and its output has increased year by year, becoming a major exporter of chemical fertilizers. In 2011, the total output of chemical fertilizers in China exceeded 60 million tons, and there was excess production of nitrogen fertilizer and phosphate fertilizer. ASEAN countries provide a broad market space for China's fertilizer exports. Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and other ASEAN countries import large quantities of fertilizer products from China each year.
At present, domestic fertilizers have successfully opened up markets in ASEAN countries, and China's exports of fertilizers to ASEAN countries are increasing. Among them, in the ASEAN urea market, China’s urea products have replaced most of the market shares of Russia and the Middle East. In the compound fertilizer market in ASEAN, which has high added value and competition is relatively intense, China’s fertilizer products also appeared.
At the same time, some countries in ASEAN are rich in potassium resources. For example, there is a wealth of potash resources in the Korat Plateau in eastern Thailand. With the continuous deepening of the cooperation between China and ASEAN fertilizers, Chinese companies can also directly participate in the investment and development of fertilizer resources in some ASEAN countries. This will not only meet the needs of the ASEAN market, but also make up for the shortage of domestic potash fertilizer production capacity.
At present, the Kai Pot Group's Asia Potash Group Co., Ltd. Laos Potash Fertilizer Project has introduced investment cooperation fund of 50 million US dollars, with good development prospects.
Although there are great market opportunities, it is also a challenge for Chinese fertilizer companies to enter the ASEAN market and expand market share.
Industry analysts believe that first, Chinese companies will face the challenges of other ASEAN countries; Second, some ASEAN countries are increasing investment in fertilizer projects, and constantly improve the self-sufficiency rate of domestic fertilizer. In the long term, this will pose challenges to China's fertilizer exports. Therefore, China's fertilizer companies how to grasp the opportunities of the ASEAN market, we still need careful consideration.
