Honeywell’s UOP announced on July 21, 2011 that it plans to launch its renewable diesel technology soon in India. The goal of the Indian government is to blend the fuel oil and diesel used in automobiles by 2017 with 20% biodiesel. However, progress in this direction has not been rapid. India's national biofuel policy envisages the use of non-edible seed oil as a raw material for biodiesel production. Jatropha cultivation is the preferred source of raw materials for the biodiesel industry in India. However, the oil production from one hectare of Jatropha plantations is about 3 tons per year. For this reason, the shortage of raw materials has become a key bottleneck in expanding the capacity of biodiesel manufacturing facilities.
In 2009, UOP announced that it will invest US$34 million in its R&D center in Gurgaon. The Gurgaon R&D center will also serve as a technology development center to guide the use of raw materials for renewable diesel in India. In 2010, UOP signed a memorandum with Indian Petroleum Co., Ltd. (IOCL), and the two companies will cooperate in the research and development of biofuel technologies and projects in India.
