New Optical Mechanical Resonator Announces Measurable Nanomagnetic Properties

[China Instrument Network Instrument Development] The University of Calgary, Canada and the University of Alberta have jointly developed a nanometer-sized device called an optical-mechanical resonator (or optical cavity) that can measure the magnetic properties of smaller objects than the device. Related research results were published in the October 31 issue of Nature Nanotechnology.


For centuries, light and magnetism have been used as measuring objects, as large as the mass of the Earth, and as tiny as tiny optical lens sensors embedded in smart phones. But as objects get smaller and smaller and nanometer size, it becomes more and more difficult to measure them with high precision and high sensitivity.

The device is the first demonstration of the use of nano-optics to detect nano-magnetic or other related microscopic phenomena, and is the first device of this type. The demonstration shows that it does detect magnetic properties with high sensitivity. In addition to providing fundamental insights into nanomagnetic phenomena, this study can also bring in many applications, from high-sensitivity sensors, enhanced magnetic storage of computer information, to the analysis of any nanoscale condensed-state material "on-chip laboratory." This technology is a key step in establishing a practical "chip lab" for studying tiny electromagnetic samples.

The new device integrates the Barkley team's expertise in engraving nano-sized optical-mechanical resonators and the Freeman team's groundbreaking work on torque magnetometry, including the integration of magnetic materials on small sensors and the opening of magnetic fields to create magnetic transitions in sensors.
