Scientists reveal insects using biological compass navigation

A problem that has plagued scientists for decades is how the Monarch butterfly flew from 2000 miles to breeding sites in the eastern United States. The researchers first discovered that they passed the sun to identify directions, but later found that they could still find directions on a cloudy day. Now they finally solved the mystery - there is a biological compass inside the insect.

The Monarch butterfly lives on Pequot Lake on the shores of the marshes in Minnesota. It lives on nectar. It uses natural bio compasses to help them migrate from North America to central Mexico. The organism is currently threatened by climate change and habitat reduction. Artificial electromagnetic noise may destroy the navigation system of the creature, and may also affect the geomagnetic orientation of migratory birds.
