For thousands of years, the mortise and tenon has been one of the primary joints for wooden construction.

Today, whether you make your mortises by hand or with a router/mortising machine/Milling Machine/etc., most woodworkers, when given a choice, make the mortise first. And the reason is simple; it is much easier to size a tenon to a mortise than it is to size a mortise to a tenon.

Regardless of your methods, the final fit is always determined by trial and error. This means your valuable time is spent approximating and this process is not only time consuming, it produces the occasional "error". Everybody can relate to the real cost of screwing up a part and most can relate to the time required to hand fit a tenon for strength-which is after all-the very purpose of the joint.

The TM-1 allows you to make dead perfect tenons without any handwork or trial and error.

Simply make your cheek cuts, make your shoulder cuts and tap together… and we guarantee that you will be left with the feeling that precision joints should not be this easy.

The TM-1 Tenonmaker is the perfect companion to our KM-1 Kerfmaker and together, these two tools will dramatically increase your productivity--there is no trial and error, clean-up, or mistakes. Furthermore, the quality of the fit is light tight (if that is your intent) and you can have 100% confidence that your joinery will be strong and professional in appearance.

The TM-1 is simple in execution; gage the width of your mortise and lock the TM-1. If you want a slight friction fit, then the jaws of the TM-1 should not fall out when held upside down. If you want a slip fit, then the jaws of the TM-1 should slip in the mortise easily. That is it.

The TM-1 is now a flip-stop and will allow you to step your stock, or a tenon jig, the exact distance to create your two primary tenon cuts. After the two/four shoulder cuts are made, your tenon will fit in the mortise exactly as gaged with TM-1 Tenonmaker.

The TM-1 Tenonmaker works every time on tenon widths up to 51mm (2"). After calibration (a one-time step which takes approximately 3 minutes), the TM-1 adds exactly one kerf width to your gaged mortise distance.

In short, you know the fit before you make your cuts!

The three through-tenons (the hardest kind) pictured on the left were cut to mate with the mortises using the TM-1 in less than 10 minutes. They are absolutely perfect.
