[China Instrument Network Instrument Development] Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley have developed a 3D printing device that is worn on the ear. By using infrared sensors to track the temperature of the tympanic membrane (also called the eardrum), the device can accurately measure the user's core body temperature in real time, allowing the user to more closely track his physical condition. This study has been published in ACS Sensors magazine.
The core temperature of the human body refers to the temperature of the human chest, abdominal cavity and central nervous system, that is, the temperature inside the body. It is one of the most important basic medical indicators of fever, insomnia, fatigue, metabolic function, and depression.

This wearable device integrates data processing circuitry and a wireless module, so it has "independent features." Users can wear it in almost any environment and any type of activity. This tiny device also includes a microphone and actuator that allow the device to double as a "bone conduction hearing aid." In other words, by wearing the device, the user can still hear the sound in the environment.
Finally, a Bluetooth module can wirelessly send core temperature data directly to a custom smartphone APP, which can be tracked by the user or medical professional.
To make the device, the researchers first printed out a substrate for the user's ear using a flexible polyurethane wire 3D with integrated microchannels for liquid metal interconnects. They then inject liquid metal into the microchannels and insert other components into the microchannel channels.
"The use of 3D printing can enable the customization of equipment to provide users with more personalized healthcare," the researchers explained, "by implementing monitoring core temperature - one of the most important medical parameters for initial medical use. Screening tests, this smart device is a major advancement in the realization of personalized healthcare."
