Continental newly developed electric vacuum pump to reduce carbon dioxide emissions

In response to the European Union’s latest regulation on the need for automobile CO2 emissions to be controlled at 95 grams per kilometer by 2020, Continental has recently developed an enhanced version of its plastic electric vacuum pump (EVP) to reduce emissions.

Mr. Michael Juerging, head of Vacuum Pumps at the Continental Group's Chassis Safety Division, said: "Electric vacuum pumps have an average reduction of 1.4 to 1.8 grams of CO2 per kilometre over mechanical vacuum pumps. Since the operation of electric vacuum pumps does not depend on the engine, Even when the engine must be switched off in the start-stop function, the electric vacuum pump can still provide vacuum."

Electric vacuum pumps can provide any vacuum required by the vehicle, especially electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles and diesel vehicles. Once the gasoline engine can not provide enough vacuum, the electric vacuum pump can be connected in a timely manner to provide continuous vacuum to ensure the normal operation of the brake booster and vacuum actuator.

The design of the electric pump ensures that it is the only vacuum source within the service life of the vehicle. According to the Continental Group, electric vacuum pumps rely on continuous supply of vacuum to effectively reduce the CO2 emissions of internal combustion engines.

Continental conducted road tests on the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions from electric vacuum pumps. The test results showed that electric vacuum pumps on average reduced the amount of carbon dioxide from 1.4 to 1.8 grams per kilometre, and the specific amount varied due to differences in the size of fuel and vehicles.

Karl-Friedrich Woersdoerfer, head of product development at the Continental Hydraulic Brake Systems Business Unit, said that the electric vacuum pump has a long service life and is flexible in installation location and manner. In addition, the effective reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and fuel consumption also makes electric vacuum pumps a powerful alternative to mechanical vacuum pumps.
