MAN Diesel & Turbo has announced that it has received the first order for a second-generation exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR system) to be installed on a 4,500 TEU container ship of Maersk Line and with the 6S80ME-C9. The 6S80ME-C9 mainframe is produced by MAN License Manufacturing, Hyundai Heavy Industries Engine and Machinery. The second generation of exhaust gas recirculation systems meets the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier III Nox emission requirements that came into effect on January 1, 2016.
The latest generation of exhaust gas recirculation systems are compact and require only minor changes to the contours of the diesel engine, so the shipyard does not need to make major design changes to the ship. The system has comprehensive fuel-burning flexibility, from burning heavy oil to distillate to natural gas, which reduces NOx emissions by discharging exhaust gases directly back into the engine's cooling unit. Reduce the oxygen content of the air in the combustion chamber, thereby reducing the engine combustion temperature and reducing the formation of nitrogen oxides.
Tests at the MAN Copenhagen Diesel Research Center show that only one exhaust gas recirculation installation can meet the upcoming IMO Tier III Nox emissions requirements. The exhaust gas recirculation system includes a cooler, a scrubber, a mist trap and An air cooler is mounted on the engine in the same way as a charge air cooler.
The target market for MAN Diesel & Turbo's exhaust gas recirculation system is ships of more than 2000 dwt. At present, there are about 18,000-20,000 ships with a capacity of more than 2,000 dwt that have been put into operation worldwide. According to MAN, the exhaust gas recirculation system has the characteristics of providing high value, environmentally friendly, global maritime navigation flexibility, increasing the resale value of the ship and having no special requirements for routine maintenance.
